Most great public spaces—particularly squares and plazas, but also pedestrian streets and intersections—not only feature well-defined 'walls'
created by building façades, but also strong entrances that provide a distinct sense of arrival. Many places accomplish this by 'compressing'
the visual field, leading people momentarily through comparably limited spaces before 'releasing' them into open spaces, to delightful effect.
